Becoming More Fully Human
Many people come to spiritual direction because something in their life is asking for attention.
A question.
A transition.
A loss.
A longing they cannot quite name.
Often they arrive looking for clarity.
Sometimes they discover something deeper.
They discover themselves.
Not the version shaped by expectations.
Not the version organized around achievement.
Not the version constantly responding to the demands of the world.
But the person beneath all of that.
The person who has been there all along.
In many ways, spiritual direction is a practice of becoming more fully human.
Not by adding something new.
But by becoming more aware.
Aware of what we feel.
Aware of what we fear.
Aware of what we love.
Aware of what gives life meaning.
Self-awareness is not self-absorption.
It is the foundation of freedom.
We cannot respond honestly to life if we do not know what is happening within us.
We cannot love deeply if we remain strangers to ourselves.
We cannot live intentionally if we are disconnected from our own experience.
The invitation of spiritual direction is simple.
To pay attention.
To notice.
To listen.
Over time, something begins to shift.
People often become less reactive.
Less divided within themselves.
More compassionate.
More grounded.
More capable of living from a deeper center.
This kind of growth may become increasingly important in an age shaped by artificial intelligence.
Technology can help us process information.
It can increase efficiency.
It can solve certain kinds of problems.
But it cannot do the work of becoming human for us.
It cannot teach us how to grieve.
How to forgive.
How to love.
How to live with courage.
How to discover meaning in suffering.
How to become the person we are capable of becoming.
These remain deeply human tasks.
And they require attention.
Reflection.
Relationship.
And time.
The goal of spiritual direction is not self-improvement.
It is something gentler and perhaps more profound.
To become more fully alive.
More fully aware.
More fully present.
More fully human.
